Instead of an engagement ring, her husband to be presented her with this cameo when they were courting. It is certainly a treasure. There are so many things about this cameo that makes it stand out.The shape is quite unusual-- a long six sided hexagon with a filigree halo frame that tests for 10K. It appears to have a darkened patina intentionally applied and has a ribbon motif which is echoed in the carving. The cameo features a classic profile portrait of a woman with flowers in her hair wearing a "necklace" featuring a single old mine cut diamond. The diamond measures about 3mm in diameter and is estimated to weigh about. The portrait is framed by a triple ribbon with forget-me-not flowers. The shell is a delicate peach color with natural variation as normally found in a cameo. The carving is extremely detailed and well done. This was undoubtedly an expensive piece when it was new.
The setting features both a bail ring on a hinge so that you can easily wear this as a pendant or a brooch. The pin itself appears to be a replacement and has a locking hook closure. It is marked for 14K.
Overall this is a large piece about 50mm long by 35mm wide with the bail extended. The back of the piece shows some minor crazing but overall this has been treasured and well cared for. This beauty weighs 9.2 grams. I have had too many packages go missing.
