A superb large antique 19th century shell cameo, the carving is a rare scene depicting Eliezer returning to the palace with Rebekah, a soldier in the background holding a spear with hound at his feet. Possibly taken from a painting by the cameo artist. Abraham who was very old sent his servant to choose a bride for his son Isaac. Eliezer left with ten camels for the journey and when he approached a well to drink, he prayed, and it was after this that Rebekah appeared with a vessel to draw water. Then Eliezer said, Please let down your jar that I may drink, and she replied, Drink, and I will water your camels too.
Eliezer believed that this was a sign from god that the kindness shown meant that this woman was to be the wife for Isaac. The cameo is in super condition without damage and set into a fine Pinchbeck frame with scroll decoration to top bottom and sides. The pin and C clasp are in very good working condition. Cameo is 2 3/8inches x 2 1/8inches. The item "Antique Victorian Large Shell Cameo Brooch Pin Eliezer & Rebekah" is in sale since Friday, September 18, 2020.
